The National Association of Holistic Aromatherapy defines aromatherapy as: “The art and science of utilizing naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spirit.”
Oils are extracted from seeds, roots, herbs, bark, and flowers. They are then used alone or as a complimentary therapy to clinical therapies and help prevent and cure illnesses. When using aromatherapy oils, it is important to remember that aromatherapy should never be used as a substitute for prescription medicines or for medical treatment, and patients should always follow a physician’s instructions first.
With that said, here are 4 reasons why you should incorporate aromatherapy in your daily life:
- Reduces Stress– It’s been proven that people who use aromatherapy oils regularly have reduced stress levels. And who doesn’t want to feel more relaxed? Studies have also shown stress levels reduced in cancer patients. As a convenience, oil manufacturing companies often create blends of oils specifically blended for stress relief. You may find these blends at any holistic store, wholefoods markets, in spas, or online.
- Reliefs Pain– Aroma therapy is highly effective for pain relief such as headaches, muscle pains, and even menstrual cramps. Sage is a natural scent that works wonders in pain relief.
- Fights Depression– Citrus scents have an uplifting quality and reduce the effects of depression. There are a number of citrus oils available such as lemon, lime, bergamot, grapefruit, tangerine, and orange. Choose your favorite, drop a few droplets into your bath water and enjoy!
- Reduces Blood Pressure– The relaxing effect of aromatherapy can help lower blood pressure in people who have hypertension. Find a relaxing blend or a pure oil and dab a drop or two on your temples or your wrists, inhale and let yourself relax.
So next time you are feeling down or in pain or you simply want to relax, try a dab or a drop of your favorite aromatherapy oil or oil blend. It’s as simple as adding the drops in your bath water or dabbing a tissue or handkerchief and inhaling the natural scents.
